(EFFECTS OF CALL ON IMMEDIATE AND DELAYED RETENTION OF VOCABULARIES IN GENERAL ENGLISH COURSE)

CALL simply means using computers to aid language learning.

  1. One of the most important aspects of language learning is retention and recall of previously learned materials.

2.Learners are encouraged to learn the original utterance rather than just prefabricated

           language.

3.Educators have negative attitude towards using the CALL and disagree with the use of CALL in classes.

STAGES OF CALL:

CALL has three stages namely:

  1. Behaviouristic CALL which regarded the computer as a mechanical instructor that never grew tired of allowing students to work individually.

  2. Communicative CALL which stressed that computer-based activities should concentrate more on using forms rather than form, teach grammar implicitly rather than explicitly and allow learners to make original utterances rather than prefabricated language.

Communicative CALL emphasizes learning as a process of discovery and development.

  1. Integrative CALL which embraces both Behaviouristic and Communicative CALL to mix different skills(listening, reading, and writing) and to incorporate technology more into the language learning process. Teachers become just facilitators and propose information on what students must learn to meet diverse needs.
